Your share refers to the percentage of copyright ownership you hold for a particular composition. If you are the sole composer of a piece, then your share is 100%. However, if you collaborate with other writers or producers, the ownership percentage is divided into shares. This division is a matter of negotiation between you and your collaborators.
For instance, if two individuals collaborate on a composition, they may agree to a 50/50 share of the ownership, each holding 50% of the shares. In the case of a band, the ownership can be divided equally among all the members, with each member holding a certain percentage of shares. Similarly, if a producer works on a song, they may ask for a percentage of the publishing, which is agreed upon with the composer(s) instead of a producer fee. It is always recommended that your collaborators agree upon the ownership shares in writing.
